Anyone who ever played “The Oregon Trail” as a kid will remember (besides “you have died of dysentery”) that the game asks you for your “jumping off point.” What town along the trail do you want your party to set out from, and at what time of year? Do you want to be the banker from Boston, the carpenter from Ohio or the farmer from Illinois?
And then there’s all the selections you had to make at Matt’s general store – how many yoke of oxen, spare wagon wheels and tongues, food, clothing and ammunition.
