Anyone who ever played “The Oregon Trail” as a kid will remember (besides “you have died of dysentery”) that the game asks you for your “jumping off point.” What town along the trail do you want your party to set out from, and at what time of year? Do you want to be the banker from Boston, the carpenter from Ohio or the farmer from Illinois?
And then there’s all the selections you had to make at Matt’s general store – how many yoke of oxen, spare wagon wheels and tongues, food, clothing and ammunition.
It’s much the same thing with starting this blog. As it is with trailing, trekking and hiking, thus it is with blogging.
First, the business of choosing a name for the URL. My mom suggested Trail Mix. Nope, Trail Mix was taken – by quite a few blogs, from the looks of things. How about Wandering Mind? That’s taken, too. Trail Head? Ditto.
(Pause here for a few moments of grumbling. Realize that “trailheadsblog” will work just fine for the URL, and you can go to town on the actual title.)
Next, the business of choosing a theme – something that looks suitably outdoorsy. And then, the widgets. Which ones do I want? Where should they go on the blog? What should I call them? Do I put the latest posts on the front page or do I choose a sticky post? (Already I’ve changed my mind on that score more than once.)
I’ve got a long list of topics I’d love to write about. Maybe I won’t be able to get to all of them, or maybe I will. Maybe I’ll have some guest bloggers chime in. Who knows?
But hiking isn’t a wind sprint. (Unless you’re into trail running – personally, I’m not.) It’s a journey, whether it’s a thousand miles or a two-mile loop hike.
So here I am now at the trailhead for the start of what looks to be a long and eventful blogging adventure. And I hope you’ll join me.
Just try not to die of dysentery – it really dampens the mood.
